Rewind Slitter Operator

Overview

Onin Staffing is seeking a detail-oriented, technically skilled Rewind Slitter Operator to join our team at our Nashville, TN converting facility. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up, adjusting, and operating high-speed slitter rewinder machinery to convert master rolls of flexible materials—including pressure-sensitive tapes, engineered foams, rubber elastomers, specialty films, and liners—into custom-width, precision-wound finished rolls.

The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, a firm grasp of web tension and roll geometry, and a dedication to safety and quality control.

Key Responsibilities

Setup & Machine Operation

  • Review job travelers, engineering specifications, and production schedules to determine material requirements, slit widths, core sizes, and winding specs.

  • Mount master material rolls onto unwind mandrels using pneumatic shafts, hoists, or roll lifters.

  • Configure and align slitting tooling (razor, score/crush, or rotary shear knives) to exact dimensional tolerances.

  • Thread web lines through tension rollers, edge guides, and slitting heads onto designated rewind shafts and cores.

  • Regulate unwind/rewind tension, web tracking, lay-on roll pressure, and line speeds to produce straight, tightly wound, telescoping-free rolls.

Quality Control & Documentation

  • Perform first-piece inspections and periodic quality checks across finished slit widths using precision calipers, gauge blocks, and steel rules.

  • Inspect webs continuously during operation to detect and eliminate defects such as edge fray, dishing, web wander, flagging, or interweaving.

  • Apply splice tapes, tail ties, end tabs, and core labels per customer specifications.

  • Accurately log production output, core/scrap weight, material lot traceability, and run downtime in the plant ERP system.

  • Tag and isolate non-conforming materials in compliance with ISO 9001 quality guidelines.

Maintenance & Workstation Safety

  • Carry out daily cleaning and preventative maintenance routines, including blade honing/replacement, shaft cleaning, adhesive buildup removal, and equipment lubrication.

  • Maintain strict adherence to machine guarding rules, pinch-point safety, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols, and required PPE.

  • Maintain a clean, organized work area applying 5S standards.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of experience operating roll slitting, slitter-rewinding, or web converting equipment.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Solid understanding of slitting methods (shear, razor, score) and differential shaft/core winding principles.

    • Proficiency reading technical work orders, shop drawings, and customer cut sheets.

    • Proven skill using precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures).

  • Math & Problem Solving: Solid shop math capabilities (fractions, decimals, imperial/metric conversions) and basic mechanical troubleshooting skills.

  • Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent vocational training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background working with adhesive-backed tapes, closed/open-cell foams, foils, and release liners.

  • Experience in an ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 registered manufacturing environment.

  • Certified or experienced in operating powered industrial trucks (forklifts), electric pallet jacks, or roll lifters.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, bend, and move actively throughout an 8- to 10-hour shift on concrete floors.

  • Ability to lift, push, and maneuver material rolls and shafts weighing up to 50 lbs regularly.

  • Normal visual acuity (with or without corrective lenses) to detect surface defects and align knife blades to fine fractional tolerances.

  • Typical manufacturing plant environment with moving machinery, moderate noise levels (hearing protection supplied), and industrial roll-handling equipment.
