Overview
The Junior Import Specialist ensures that the costing for all inbound containers is processed accurately and in timely manner. Supports the customs clearance process by assisting with the preparation, review, and submission of import and export documentation in compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations to our Customs Broker. This role works closely with our internal management team and our Customs Broker to ensure timely and accurate clearance of shipments.
Skills and Experience
Key Responsibilities:
Container Costing:
- Experience with costing of inbound freight
- Knowledge of costing processes for ocean freight charges and fees
- Understanding of purchase cost of goods and landed cost calculations
- Ability to analyze and reconcile freight invoices and cost discrepancies
Customs/Tariffs:
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, and shipping documents for accuracy and compliance and send them to our Customs Broker.
- Review all 7501 customs entries and send the approval to our Customs Broker.
- Classify goods using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) under supervision.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations.
- Communicate with internal teams regarding shipment status and documentation requirements
- Monitor shipments and resolve clearance issues or delays
- Maintain accurate records of entries and supporting documentation
- Support audits and compliance reviews as needed
- Stay updated on changes in customs regulations and trade laws
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred (International Business, Logistics, or related field)
- 1–2 years of experience in Import Specialist, logistics, or international trade (internships accepted)
- Knowledge of import/export processes and basic customs regulations preferred
- Familiarity with ACE systems and HTS classification is a plus
- Must have Intermediate Excel Skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills (English required)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Preferred Skills:
- Basic understanding of Incoterms
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to handle multiple shipments simultaneously
