Overview

General Duties & Responsibilities:

Operations Management

  • Oversee daily scrap yard operations: receiving, sorting, processing, and shipping metals.

  • Direct workflow to maximize productivity.

  • Operate and supervise use of heavy equipment (shears, balers, loaders, forklifts, cranes).

  • Schedule maintenance and repairs to reduce downtime.

  • Implement and improve operational policies and procedures.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, train, and manage yard staff.

  • Promote teamwork and continuous improvement.

  • Conduct performance reviews and address discipline as needed.

  • Manage scheduling, timecards, and staffing levels.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce safety policies and regulatory compliance (OSHA, EPA, etc.).

  • Conduct safety meetings, inspections, and risk assessments.

  • Train staff on safety practices and PPE use.

  • Maintain permits and ensure environmental compliance.

Inventory & Quality Control

  • Maintain accurate material inventory.

  • Oversee quality control and grading of scrap.

  • Collaborate with commercial team on markets, purchasing, and sales.

  • Minimize material loss through proper handling and storage.

Financial & Administrative

  • Assist with budget planning and management.

  • Monitor KPIs (production, recovery, costs).

  • Approve purchases for supplies, equipment, and services.

  • Maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and carriers.

Skills and Experience

Qualifications & Competencies

●Required:

· High School Diploma or GED equivalent./ Associates is preferred but not required

· Minimum of 5 years of experience in the scrap metal recycling industry or a related heavy industrial environment (e.g., manufacturing, construction, waste management).

· Minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory or management role.

· Proven experience operating heavy machinery such as loaders, forklifts, and material handlers.

· Strong knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metal identification and grading.

· Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

· Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

· Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, email)
