Recycling Operations Technician

Overview

Summary

The Recycling Laborer supports daily recycling operations by unloading, sorting, and processing recyclable materials such as ferrous (iron-containing) and non-ferrous metals. This role helps ensure materials are properly separated, processed, and prepared for shipment. Responsibilities may include operating basic equipment such as forklifts, balers, and conveyors, assisting customers with unloading materials, and maintaining a safe and organized work environment throughout the facility.

Essential Functions

  • Safely perform duties within assigned work areas while following all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Unload recyclable materials from trucks, containers, or customer vehicles.
  • Sort and separate recyclable metals and materials according to type and quality standards.
  • Operate equipment such as forklifts, conveyors, and balers to move, compact, or package materials for storage or transport.
  • Monitor materials at assigned stations and ensure proper quality control during sorting and packaging processes.
  • Assist customers when unloading recyclable materials and help direct them to the correct processing area.
  • Serve as a material resource at assigned stations by identifying different types of metals and recyclables.
  • Clean and maintain customer-assigned equipment, tools, and workstations.
  • Perform general housekeeping tasks including sweeping, organizing materials, and removing debris to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Support other operational tasks as needed to help maintain efficient recycling operations.

Work Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at a recycling or processing facility. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, wind, and dusty or muddy environments. The position may involve exposure to airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and heavy equipment. Noise levels can be loud at times, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required.
