Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Shop Supervisor to lead daily operations within our structural steel fabrication facility. This position is responsible for supervising production personnel, ensuring quality and safety standards are met, driving operational efficiency, and developing team members through hands-on training and leadership.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in structural steel fabrication, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to effectively train and mentor welders, fitters, and fabrication personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of shop personnel, including welders, fitters, machine operators, fabricators, and material handlers.
- Promote a safe, productive, and positive work environment.
- Monitor workflow and production schedules to ensure projects are completed on time and to quality standards.
- Recommend and implement improvements to production processes, equipment utilization, quality, and efficiency.
- Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, job orders, and company procedures.
- Evaluate employee performance and provide coaching, feedback, and recommendations for development.
- Develop and deliver training programs for new hires and existing employees across multiple skill levels.
- Create objective performance evaluations and training assessments.
- Ensure employees are properly trained in fabrication techniques, safety procedures, and company standards.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for shop operations and fabrication processes.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and workforce development.
Skills and Experience
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in commercial structural steel fabrication required.
- Strong hands-on experience with GMAW welding processes.
- Proficient in steel fitting and fabrication practices.
- Thorough understanding of structural steel fabrication workflows and shop operations.
- Strong knowledge of quality control requirements and industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, structural details, and general notes.
- Proven experience training, mentoring, and developing fabrication personnel.
- Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to improve operational efficiency and productivity.
Preferred Skills
- Previous supervisory or management experience in a structural steel fabrication environment.
- Experience implementing process improvements and lean manufacturing principles.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
