Overview
A manufacturing welder, or fabricator, uses specialized machinery to fuse metal parts, creating or repairing components according to blueprints and technical specifications. Key duties include operating MIG, TIC or ARC welding equipment, ensuring structural integrity, and adhering to strict safety protocols. They often work in production environments, managing high-heat tools to produce finished goods.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- PRODUCTION WELDING: Use MIG, TIG, Flux-Cored, or Stick welding to join metal components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
- BLUEPRINT READING: Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and measurements to plan layout and assembly.
- EQUIPMENT SETUP: Configure welding machines, including selecting wire, gas, and voltage settings.
- QUALITY INSPECTION: Assess welded surfaces to identify flaws and ensure compliance with specifications.
- FABRICATION & REPAIR: Cut, shape, and repair metal products using grinders, plasma cutters, and torches.
- SAFETY COMPLIANCE: Wear protective gear and maintain a clean, safe workspace, adhering to OSHA regulations.
Skills and Experience
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED; technical or welding school certification is often preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: Previous manufacturing or fabrication experience is typically required.
- SKILLS: Strong knowledge of metal types (steel, aluminum), welding techniques, and machine maintenance.
- PHYSICAL STAMINA: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects (up to 50lbs), and work in confined spaces.
