Overview
Job Purpose:
The Powder Coat Manager oversees all powder coating operations within a machine shop environment, ensuring high-quality finishes on metal components while maintaining efficiency, safety, and compliance with industry standards. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in powder coating processes, and the ability to manage a team in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Operational Management:
Plan, schedule, and supervise powder coating activities to meet production deadlines.
Ensure proper setup, operation, and maintenance of powder coating equipment, ovens, and spray booths.
Monitor workflow and adjust resources to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
Quality Control:
Implement and enforce quality standards for coating thickness, adhesion, and finish appearance.
Conduct inspections and troubleshoot coating defects (e.g., runs, orange peel, poor adhesion).
Maintain documentation for quality assurance and compliance with customer specifications.
Team Leadership:
Train, mentor, and supervise powder coating technicians and support staff.
Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Manage staffing levels, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions as needed. Safety Compliance:
Ensure adherence to OSHA regulations and environmental standards for powder coating operations.
Maintain proper handling and disposal of powders and chemicals.
Conduct regular safety audits and implement corrective actions.
Inventory; Cost Control:
Manage inventory of powders, chemicals, and related supplies.
Monitor usage and reduce waste to control costs.
Coordinate with purchasing for timely replenishment of materials. Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities for efficiency gains and implement lean manufacturing principles.
Stay updated on new powder coating technologies and best practices.
Skills and Experience
Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years in powder coating operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
Experience in a machine shop or metal fabrication environment strongly preferred.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of powder coating processes, equipment, and troubleshooting.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ERP systems for scheduling and reporting.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
Comfortable working in a high-temperature, industrial environment.
