Overview
A Sandblaster is responsible for operating blasting equipment to clean, prepare, or finish surfaces on metal, wood, concrete, or other materials. This role involves using abrasive blasting tools to remove rust, paint, scale, or debris and ensure surfaces are properly prepared for coating, painting, or assembly. The Sandblaster must follow safety procedures, equipment maintenance practices, and quality standards throughout the blasting process.
Skills and Experience
- Operate sandblasting equipment (pressure blast, cabinet systems, portable units, etc.) to clean and prepare surfaces.
- Remove rust, old coatings, scale, oils, and contaminants using approved blasting materials.
- Read and interpret job specifications, blueprints, and finishing requirements.
- Mask and protect areas not to be blasted or affected by abrasive material.
- Inspect finished surfaces to ensure quality standards and proper texture or blast profile.
- Mix and load abrasive materials such as sand, steel shot, bead, or grit into equipment.
- Maintain blasting equipment, hoses, nozzles, and filters to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Follow safety and environmental procedures, including proper handling of dust collectors and ventilation systems.
- Assist with coating, painting, or finishing operations as needed.
- Record job data, material usage, and production logs.
- Experience operating abrasive blasting equipment (preferred but not always required).
- Ability to read job specifications, measurements, and surface finish requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain consistent finish quality.
- Understanding of industrial safety standards and PPE use (respirators, gloves, suits, etc.).
- Ability to work in confined spaces, noisy environments, or standing for prolonged periods.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
