Overview
A citrus grader inspects, sorts, and classifies harvested citrus fruits (like oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits) before they are packed and shipped.
Examine moving fruit on conveyor belts to identify and remove items with defects, punctures, soft spots, mold, or insect damage.
Sorting and Categorizing: Classify citrus based on established industry and USDA grades (e.g., Fancy, Choice, Juice) by evaluating appearance and skin texture. Separate fruit according to specific size requirements and color maturity standards to ensure uniform packaging. Remove leaves, twigs, dirt, debris, and unmarketable "cull" fruit from the sorting line.
Skills and Experience
Sharp vision and strong color perception to spot minor blemishes and color variations quickly. High dexterity to quickly grab and sort fast-moving fruit without damaging it. Ability to stand in one place for long periods and perform repetitive physical tasks. Sustained focus to maintain quality control standards during long shifts.
