Overview
Position Summary
Provide customer service support to patients by researching and resolving billing questions, reconciling patient accounts, and ensuring compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality service and support to internal and external customers
- Maintain professional, respectful communication with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital/medical group staff
- Handle patient billing inquiries and complaints by phone, email, and in person; research and resolve issues
- Partner with internal departments to obtain accurate service details, coding, and documentation
- Reconcile remittance advice and patient accounts; resolve discrepancies
- Research and reconcile credit balances, including submitting refund requests as needed
- Follow up on unpaid claims; contact patients to gather needed info, secure payments, or set up payment plans
- Review billing for accuracy and compliance with financial policies/procedures
- Register patients for appointments related to the hospital charity/discount program
- Document account activity and updates in the appropriate systems
- Process credit card payments and complete insurance verification/updates
- Respond to patient mail related to billing inquiries
- Greet walk-in patients and assist with complex billing questions
- Perform clerical/administrative tasks (filing/scanning, data entry, phone support, special projects)
- Maintain confidentiality, data security, and workflow standards
- Ensure compliance with FDCPA, FCRA, HIPAA, and applicable local/state/federal regulations
Skills and Experience
Requirements / Qualifications
- Bilingual English/Spanish required
- Medical terminology/coding/hospital operations/financial services knowledge preferred (not required)
- Proficient with PC systems, software applications, and office equipment (phone, fax, scanner, copier)
- Strong written and verbal communication; organized with solid follow-up and deadline management
- Professional phone etiquette and appearance
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask
- Typing 30 WPM; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Able to sit at a workstation for 2 hours without interruption
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Must pass a criminal history/background screening
