Overview
The LTL Freight Packer and Forklift Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient movement, packing, and loading of all less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments. This position requires operating a forklift and other material-handling equipment to move freight to and from trailers, consolidate multiple shipments, and prepare items for shipping. Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are critical.
Responsibilities
- Load and unload freight from trailers using a forklift, pallet jack, or by hand.
- Inspect all incoming and outgoing shipments for any damage, discrepancies, or shortages and report them to a supervisor.
- Consolidate smaller LTL shipments from different customers onto single pallets to maximize efficiency.
- Properly sort, wrap, and label freight for outbound shipping, ensuring it is secure for transport.
- Verify that products being packed match the shipping documents, such as bills of lading and manifests.
- Stage and organize freight in the correct storage bays according to inventory control instructions.
- Assist with regular inventory counts and track the movement of inventory using an RF scanner or warehouse management system (WMS).
- Perform daily safety checks and basic maintenance on forklifts and other equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, following all company and OSHA safety guidelines.
- Communicate with team members, drivers, and supervisors to coordinate daily tasks.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience as a forklift operator in a warehouse or freight environment.
- Valid forklift operator certification, with experience operating different types of equipment (e.g., sit-down, stand-up, reach truck).
- Knowledge of LTL procedures and experience with freight handling.
- Proficiency with RF scanners and inventory tracking systems.
- Ability to read and comprehend shipping documents and instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy items (e.g., up to 50–70 lbs).
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and following all workplace regulations.
